Denmark Implements Social Media Prohibition for Individuals Below 15

Denmark has revealed intentions to prohibit social media access for individuals under 15, aligning itself with other nations focusing on Big Tech. The specifics of the ban’s implementation remain unclear, but a plan for an age-verification application is reportedly in the works, enabling parents to allow access for children as young as 13 following an evaluation. This positions Denmark alongside countries such as Australia, which is set to impose a social media ban for minors in December, levying significant fines on platforms that do not comply. In the United States, although there is no national regulation in place, several states have either proposed or enacted legislation that restricts minors’ use of social media, encountering legal scrutiny regarding First Amendment concerns. Denmark’s action could alter the balance of power between governments and Big Tech, affecting the obligations related to age verification.
