Digg Reemerges to Compete with Reddit: Ways to Access the Digg Beta

Before Reddit earned the title of “front page of the internet,” Digg occupied that role. Digg, a user-driven content platform, introduced the concept of “upvoting” links. Nonetheless, a botched redesign resulted in a drop in its popularity, prompting users to flock to Reddit, which subsequently evolved into one of the largest websites on the internet. Digg faced challenges with various editorial strategies.

Now, Digg’s original creator Kevin Rose is teaming up with Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian to reintroduce the platform. Digg is staging a revival, looking to rival Reddit with Ohanian’s assistance. (Ohanian departed Reddit in 2020.)

On Wednesday, Digg’s beta version was officially made available to the public at Digg.com. Interested individuals can register for the beta now.

In a discussion with TechCrunch, Rose outlined his aspirations for the reestablished Digg, emphasizing the importance of fostering user trust and averting AI bots from skewing the platform. For example, a Digg community for tech hardware enthusiasts might necessitate proof of ownership.

At its launch, the new Digg boasts 21 general communities covering subjects like science, humor, tech, gaming, and entertainment. About 67,000 users received invitations prior to the public release.

With the public launch, anyone is welcome to register, and communities can be formed around any subject or niche. However, each community presently has only one manager. Digg CEO Justin Mezzell stated that the company intends to launch the platform and subsequently develop and roll out new features weekly as Digg progresses.

Digg is also rolling out a podcast powered by AI called Digg Daily, which daily summarizes the platform’s leading stories. The company is contemplating the addition of human hosts based on user responses.

Following the unsuccessful redesign in 2010 that led to Digg’s downfall, the platform changed hands multiple times until Rose and Ohanian acquired it and revealed their relaunch strategy last year.

Users can register for the new Digg at Digg.com now.
