Discord is delaying its age verification implementation due to considerable user backlash regarding privacy issues. Although the platform still plans to apply mandatory age checks for all users, the worldwide rollout has been pushed back to the latter half of 2026. In the meantime, Discord intends to address user apprehensions by outlining what users can expect once the changes take effect.

Co-founder Stanislav Vishnevskiy responded to worries about Discord’s age verification system in a blog post, aiming to calm users. He admitted that the company should have offered more information regarding its plans and the process, emphasizing that face scans and ID uploads are not obligatory for all users. The intention is to preserve the Discord experience for the majority while ensuring appropriate content for different age groups.

Discord revealed that all user accounts will be set to teen safety settings starting in March, which can only be turned off following age verification. This will involve blurring sensitive content and limiting access to certain areas. A significant number of users have voiced their discontent, with some shifting to other platforms.

Vishnevskiy mentioned that the majority of users’ experiences would not be impacted, as the platform will gauge ages using existing data without necessitating additional input. For those requiring verification, options will be available to confirm age without disclosing identity. Discord will not obtain personal data, collaborating with outside companies for age verification.

Despite efforts to guarantee privacy, Discord has encountered security problems with contractors. The company has ceased its partnership with Persona after a trial demonstrated data sharing and exposed files. Vishnevskiy stated that Discord does not engage with vendors linked to earlier breaches.

Before continuing with the global rollout, Discord plans to achieve milestones to restore user confidence, which includes providing additional verification options, identifying partner companies, and releasing system data. A new “spoiler channel” feature will facilitate tagging channels as mature without implementing age restrictions on servers.

Age verification has emerged as a worldwide concern, with governments enforcing laws that mandate such measures on social media platforms. Nonetheless, research indicates that these laws may prove ineffective in safeguarding minors and could hinder free expression.
