Elon Musk may soon launch his own political party. The CEO of Tesla and SpaceX has revealed his intention to form the “America Party” if President Donald Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” gets the green light, condemning what he describes as “crazy spending.”
“If this crazy spending bill is enacted, the America Party will be established the very next day,” Musk shared on X on Monday. “Our nation requires an alternative to the Democrat-Republican uniparty so that the citizens genuinely have a VOICE.”
Once an ardent supporter of Trump, Musk has recently encountered a considerable rift with the U.S. president. The billionaire stepped down from his position as the unofficial head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) at the end of May and has openly criticized Trump’s budget proposal, leading to a social media conflict. Musk even suggested that Trump is “in the Epstein files,” although he later voiced remorse for his comments. Only time will reveal if he will regret these as well.
“It is evident with the outrageous spending of this bill, which raises the debt ceiling by a staggering FIVE TRILLION DOLLARS that we exist in a one-party nation — the PORKY PIG PARTY!!” Musk stated. “It’s time for a new political party that truly cares about the populace.”
The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, a non-partisan group analyzing federal budgets, estimates that the One Big Beautiful Bill Act could lead to an additional $5 trillion in national debt over the next ten years. The Congressional Budget Office, also non-partisan, has provided a somewhat hopeful assessment, estimating the act could increase U.S. debt by about $3.3 trillion.
Trump has been advocating for his proposed budget to be approved before July 4. While the voting process for the bill has started, the Senate has yet to pass the legislation and is still deliberating on amendments.
“Every congressional member who ran on a platform of reducing government spending and then promptly voted for the largest debt surge in history should hang their heads in shame!” Musk tweeted on Monday. “And they will lose their primary next year if it’s the last thing I do in this life.”
Despite his warnings, Musk has a long record of making promises that he has failed to fulfill. He originally claimed that DOGE would cut government spending by at least $2 trillion, but later adjusted that aim to $150 billion within three months of Trump taking office. Instead, DOGE has mostly resulted in chaos for U.S. government agencies, leading to over 280,000 layoffs and attempting to completely dismantle certain agencies.
Certainly, DOGE also illustrated that establishing an organization is far simpler than fulfilling its commitments. The wealthiest individual globally is already discussing fundraising for an electoral campaign, even with a net worth exceeding $400 billion.
Musk also conducted a poll on X posing the question, “Is it time to create a new political party in America that genuinely represents the 80% in the middle?” The poll attracted about 5.6 million responses, with around 80 percent answering affirmatively.
“VOX POPULI, VOX DEI,” Musk shared while presenting the results (original emphasis).
“Vox populi, vox dei” translates to “the voice of the people [is] the voice of God.” Musk has previously employed this phrase in other polls, although the outcomes do not seem to have any tangible influence on his actions. The phrase is a short form of the complete saying: “Nec audiendi qui solent dicere, Vox populi, vox Dei, quum tumultuositas vulgi semper insaniae proxima sit.” In English: “And those who say that the voice of the people is the voice of God should not be heard, as the tumult of the crowd is always very near to madness.”
Should Musk succeed in creating a new U.S. political party, he would technically be barred from running for president himself. According to Article II, Section 1, Clause 5 of the U.S. Constitution, a candidate must be “a natural born Citizen” to qualify for the presidency. Since Musk was born in Pretoria, South Africa, he is thus disqualified as a candidate. Nonetheless, it would not be astonishing if he sought to use a proxy or find another way around this limitation.
