In episode 6 of *Pluribus*, considerable revelations unfold, one disquieting and another perhaps promising for Carol (Rhea Seehorn). The episode delves into fresh understandings regarding the virus and how it spreads.
Carol heads to Las Vegas to meet Mr. Diabaté (Samba Schutte), one of the rare individuals who remains uninfected, to talk about the milk and what it contains. However, through a comedic John Cena cameo, she learns he is already aware. As Carol gets ready to depart, Mr. Diabaté imparts new details about the virus:
Mr. Diabaté: “They cannot convert us. Not without our approval.”
Carol: “What are you saying?”
D: “The virus must be customized to our stem cells, which necessitates gathering them from our bodies.”
C: “Uh… What? Excuse me?”
D: “This entails a painful, invasive operation involving a large needle in the hip bone, which requires our consent.”
C: “When did you learn this?”
D: “They identified this just yesterday.”
Carol confirms this with the Joined, who are incapable of deception, and explicitly refuse consent.
For Carol, this disclosure brings relief. Her anxiety about becoming one of the Joined diminishes, as they cannot move forward without her permission. Nevertheless, Mr. Diabaté cautions that the Joined are unhappy about this information. Their aim continues to be the propagation of the virus, and with the brightest minds in the world under their influence, they may ultimately discover a way to evade the requirement for consent.
Carol enjoys a brief moment of respite, but her security is still not assured.
