In episode 8 of *Pluribus*, Carol (Rhea Seehorn) cautiously reconnects with the Others, balancing her yearning for human interaction with her desire to mend the world. This reunion enables her to gather deeper insights about the Others, as she interrogates Zosia (Karolina Wydra) in detail.
Carol discovers numerous details about the Others, which she records on her “What I Know About Them” whiteboard:
1. They consume humans.
2. They participate in communal sleeping for warmth.
3. They convey messages through the body’s electric charge.
4. They utilize trains for food transport.
5. Individuals are sentient, and everyone is aware.
6. They receive signals from Kepler-22b, located 640 lightyears away.
7. They are constructing a massive antenna, consuming the world’s energy to transmit a signal to space.
The final point is shared with Zosia while gazing at Kepler-22b, the origin of the virus signal. Zosia states, “We will likely never understand the first thing about them. They are too distant. But we know we love them and are thankful to them. And we will return the favor, regardless of how long it takes.” When Carol seeks more details, Zosia discloses the Others’ objective: “We must share their gift with anyone else who might be out there.”
The Others intend to broaden their utopian awareness by building a large antenna to resend the message Earth received. This prompts inquiries regarding the virus’s source. Did the inhabitants of Kepler-22b originate it, or were they transmitting it after being infected? What was the true intent of the virus’s creator? Was it to spread joy or to incapacitate planets for conquest?
