Marvel enthusiasts, celebrate! Marvel Studios has officially unveiled the first complete trailer for the eagerly awaited Fantastic Four: First Steps — and it exceeds all of our expectations.
This retro-futuristic installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe plunges directly into the origin story of Marvel’s First Family, commencing with a nostalgic overview narrated by the fictional talk show host Ted Gilbert (portrayed by Mark Gatiss). “We all know the tale,” he starts — and with multiple film adaptations, it’s true that we do. “Four courageous astronauts venture into space and return forever altered.”
Those astronauts consist of Reed Richards (Pedro Pascal), Sue Storm (Vanessa Kirby), Ben Grimm (Ebon Moss-Bachrach), and Johnny Storm (Joseph Quinn). Upon coming back to Earth, each one finds they possess unique superpowers: Reed evolves into the flexible Mr. Fantastic, Sue acquires the abilities of invisibility and generating forcefields as the Invisible Woman, Ben turns into the immensely powerful Thing, and Johnny bursts into flames as the fiery Human Torch.
The trailer not only showcases their abilities — it also explores the team’s familial relationships. We witness lighter interactions, such as Ben praising the culinary skills of robot assistant H.E.R.B.I.E., alongside more intimate moments, like Johnny inadvertently uncovering that Sue and Reed are expecting a child.
However, no superhero narrative is complete without a strong villain — or two. This time, the Fantastic Four confront two of Marvel’s most famous foes. The Silver Surfer (played by Julia Garner) arrives on Earth with a grave warning: “Your planet is now marked for destruction.” This is due to Galactus, the cosmic world-eater (brought to life by Ralph Ineson), rapidly approaching. The trailer hints at his impending arrival with foreboding imagery — his enormous shadow cast over Manhattan and his giant footsteps crushing the streets of New York.
The stakes are incredibly high, and the Fantastic Four are poised for their greatest challenge yet.
Fantastic Four: First Steps hits theaters on July 25.
