Warner Bros. Discovery is officially reinstating the HBO Max title — and television enthusiasts are rejoicing over the comeback of the cherished brand.
This announcement was made during the company’s 2025 upfront presentation, indicating a reversal of its earlier 2023 decision to eliminate the “HBO” designation and rebrand the streaming service simply as Max. That decision, made following the merger with Discovery+, faced considerable backlash for relinquishing the prestige and recognition tied to the HBO name — despite the platform continuing to offer HBO content.
The initial rebranding aimed to merge HBO’s scripted programming with Discovery+’s reality TV offerings under a single banner. However, it appears Warner Bros. Discovery is reconsidering that approach. In conjunction with the name revival, the company is also eliminating hundreds of seasons of reality TV content from the service, indicating a shift towards a more selective, quality-driven strategy.
In a press statement, the company outlined its new focus: “No consumer today is expressing a desire for more content, but the majority are seeking better content.”
The HBO Max name is set to officially return this summer, but online reactions have already begun — with many individuals humorously commenting on the reversal.
One user joked, “Does the person who created the name HBO Max get a paycheck again?” Another remarked, “HBO Max would make a lovely name for a baby girl.” Others pointed out the irony of the rebranding, particularly as the platform continues to produce contentious projects like the new J.K. Rowling series.
Ultimately, this decision appears to recognize what viewers have always understood: HBO is a name that holds value. As the adage goes, if it ain’t broken, don’t change it.
