FBI Alerts Voters Regarding Disinformation Videos Related to Elections

**FBI Alerts Public to Disinformation Videos Regarding Elections**

On Saturday, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) issued a caution regarding two online videos that falsely purport to originate from the bureau.

The initial video claims that the FBI has arrested three factions engaged in ballot manipulation, while the second video discusses allegations concerning Doug Emhoff, the spouse of Vice President and presidential hopeful Kamala Harris, often referred to as the Second Gentleman. The FBI stated, “These videos are not legitimate, do not originate from the FBI, and the content they present is inaccurate.” This message was communicated via the FBI’s official X (formerly Twitter) channel.

As the 2024 presidential election draws near, worries surrounding misinformation and disinformation are escalating. Erroneous assertions about rigged voting apparatus, delays in election day, and fabricated polling data are swiftly proliferating on social media outlets. Although some of this misinformation may stem from internet trolls, there are fears that foreign adversaries might be conducting disinformation campaigns aimed at creating division and disorder within the United States.

On Friday, Nov. 1, the FBI, in association with the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), released a collective statement regarding two additional videos thought to be linked to Russian disinformation activities.

One video incorrectly asserts that people from Haiti participated in illegal voting across several counties in Georgia, a claim that has been refuted by the Georgia Secretary of State. The second video, which is also false, alleges that an individual related to the Democratic presidential ticket accepted a bribe from a U.S. entertainer.

The involved agencies believe these videos are part of a wider strategy to erode confidence in the electoral process and intensify tensions. “In the days leading up to election day and in the subsequent weeks and months, the Intelligence Community anticipates that Russia will create and disseminate more media content designed to undermine trust in the electoral integrity and create division among Americans.”

As election day approaches, it is essential to stay alert to deepfakes and disinformation, particularly those produced by AI. Always rely on credible sources for accurate election details and remain educated on how to detect AI-generated images and videos.
