Feds Probing Tesla’s ‘Mad Max’ Feature

While U.S. regulators are probing Tesla for violations and safety concerns related to “Full Self-Driving,” Elon Musk’s company unveiled a new full self-driving (FSD) mode termed “Mad Max” earlier this month.

A report from Reuters indicates that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has reached out to Tesla concerning the “Mad Max” mode.

“NHTSA is in communication with the manufacturer to obtain further information,” the agency stated. “The individual operating the vehicle is completely liable for driving and adhering to all traffic safety regulations.”

An NHTSA inquiry would serve as the preliminary step toward a formal probe into Mad Max mode.

What does Tesla’s new Mad Max Mode entail?

Mad Max is inspired by the film series noted for its dystopian themes and thrilling car stunts, originally featuring Mel Gibson and later showcasing actors such as Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron.

The name raises alarms when associated with a self-driving car feature.

Electrek has reported that the Mad Max mode permits the vehicle to surpass speed limits and maneuver through traffic with more aggression.

“Introduced a new speed profile MAD MAX, characterized by increased speeds and more frequent lane changes compared to HURRY,” the Tesla release notes for the feature state, as per Tesla Oracle.

A Tesla owner on X shared a video demonstrating their vehicle in Mad Max mode, highlighting how it “accelerates rapidly” on an open highway. The footage also depicted the Tesla disregarding a stop sign while in Mad Max mode.

Another Tesla owner uploaded a YouTube video showing their vehicle achieving 79 miles per hour.
