After almost five years, Fortnite is set to potentially make its comeback on iPhones.
Epic Games, the studio behind Fortnite, revealed via CEO Tim Sweeney on X (formerly Twitter) that the widely-loved battle royale title might reappear on the iOS App Store in the U.S. as soon as next week. This represents a significant shift following the game’s ban from Apple devices in 2020, triggered by a clash between Epic and Apple over the tech giant’s in-app purchase regulations.
The dispute commenced when Epic rolled out a direct payment option within Fortnite, circumventing Apple’s typical 30% commission on in-app purchases. Consequently, Apple took action to remove Fortnite from the App Store, igniting a high-stakes legal confrontation between the two firms.
A recent court decision rendered on Wednesday favored Epic, concluding that Apple had breached a prior ruling by persistently enforcing a 27% commission on transactions made outside its App Store and by employing practices that deterred alternative payment options. Consequently, Apple faced contempt of court and was instructed to halt these actions.
In response to the ruling, Epic is gearing up to reintroduce Fortnite on iOS in the U.S. next week. However, Sweeney mentioned that Epic will only fully withdraw the case and reinstate Fortnite on a global scale if Apple implements the court-ordered adjustments across all its international App Stores—not solely in the U.S.
Therefore, while the return of Fortnite to iPhones is on the horizon, the overarching resolution is still contingent on Apple’s forthcoming actions. The ball is now in their court.
