A day following reports about significant layoffs at Microsoft and its gaming sector, Xbox, the Sony-published video game Helldivers 2 revealed its release on Xbox next month.
In the past, game publishers generally kept their titles exclusive to their platforms, such as Sony games on PlayStation and Microsoft games on Xbox, but that pattern appears to be shifting. Helldivers 2, one of the leading games of 2024, will launch on Xbox Series X and S starting August 26. The game premiered on PlayStation 5 and PC in February 2024 and was an immediate success, selling tens of millions of copies, as reported by IGN. Helldivers 2 continues to be a hit on Steam.
Helldivers 2 is a cooperative, third-person shooter set in the 22nd century, showcasing human soldiers battling alien hordes to protect Super Earth. With crossplay capabilities, players on Xbox, PC, and PS5 can all enjoy Helldivers 2 together.
The announcement of Helldivers 2’s arrival on Xbox is particularly notable as it aligns with Microsoft’s release of Gears of War: Reloaded on PlayStation 5, representing the first occasion the previously Xbox-exclusive series ventures onto PlayStation. Additionally, Xbox’s The Outer Worlds 2 is scheduled to launch on PlayStation in October.
Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer shared his perspectives on exclusivity earlier this year.
“We’ve discovered that our games launching on various platforms benefits Xbox,” Spencer mentioned on The Destin Channel podcast. “It strengthens Xbox… provides our teams with the time they require, enabling us to invest in platform, allowing us to enhance hardware. I believe all of this is part of what Xbox will evolve into, going forward.”
