Animation icon Genndy Tartakovsky is beloved by viewers of all generations for his contributions to Cartoon Network programs such as Dexter’s Laboratory and Samurai Jack, in addition to the Hotel Transylvania movie franchise. His newest endeavor, Netflix’s Fixed, is aimed exclusively at an adult audience.
This R-rated comedy centers around a mutt named Bull (voiced by Adam DeVine), who learns he is scheduled to be neutered the following day. This shocking information propels him into a final night of revelry with his friends — and his testicles. Indeed, Bull’s testicles play a prominent role throughout the film, and in one bizarre moment, he even imagines them having conversations with him!
Tartakovsky appeared on Mashable’s Say More to talk about all aspects of Fixed and to illustrate some of his most memorable characters, including Dexter from Dexter’s Laboratory. In the interview snippet, he delves into the film’s 2D animation style.
“[Fixed] embodies everything I cherished in animation, modernizing it while still employing the techniques that were utilized in the ’40s and ’50s,” Tartakovsky shared with Mashable.
Influences from this period encompassed Warner Bros. cartoons, such as Looney Tunes and Tex Avery’s works, which are cornerstones of the golden age of American animation.
“A quirky animation detail that I adored about those classic Warner Bros. and Tex Avery cartoons is the highly specific character animation,” Tartakovsky noted. “Because the movement wasn’t true to life, that’s the key factor, that’s what captured my heart. It was remarkably tailored to what the characters and the animator could visualize.”
He added: “So when I began my journey in animation, and when an audience responds with laughter to a motion you conjured from thin air, that was when I realized, ‘I’m hooked.’ It’s akin to performing stand-up on stage, without any of that pressure and all that anxiety. I could perform through the movements I create.”
