One of Mashable’s top picks from SXSW 2025 — and recipient of the Howl of Fame Award at the event — Good Boy is set to hit theaters this fall to provide some genuine frights, particularly for canine enthusiasts.
The narrative is simple: a dog in a haunted house detects spirits that his owner cannot perceive. It’s nerve-racking to witness, not only because audiences frequently resonate more with dogs than human figures, but also thanks to co-writer/director Ben Leonberg’s collaboration with Indy, the family’s dog who shines on screen. Their synergy is as effortless as one would anticipate from a man and his faithful companion.
In my enthusiastic review from SXSW, I noted, “Indy shines from his very first shot. His dark gaze, floppy ears, and endearing demeanor make him immediately cherished. Beyond that, he is incredibly eager to follow whatever direction Leonberg gives him. Sitting and staring into a creepy void? Springing into action? Reacting to a splash of blood? Sprinting to Todd for protection? Indy is an excellent boy, in every sense.”
Though the haunted house theme might seem conventional, it feels invigorating with the furry protagonist at the forefront. This trailer provides a sneak peek of the chills Leonberg has lined up, along with some of the praise Good Boy has already garnered from critics.
Be warned: this one had me howling at the screen. Do you think you can endure it?
Good Boy premieres in theaters on Oct. 3.
