As we look forward to the start of [Super Bowl LIX](https://mashable.com/article/super-bowl-2025-cheat-sheet-chiefs-eagles), a [Google](https://mashable.com/category/google) advertisement scheduled to air during the event is once again under fire.
The commercial, aimed at demonstrating the features of Google’s Gemini AI chatbot, seems to have misrepresented its AI-generated content, according to [The Verge](https://www.theverge.com/news/608188/google-fake-gemini-ai-output-super-bowl). In the advertisement, Wisconsin Cheese Mart allegedly utilizes Gemini to create a product description for gouda cheese. However, the paragraph shown in the ad was actually lifted verbatim from Wisconsin Cheese Mart’s website, as verified by the [Wayback Machine](https://web.archive.org/web/20200807133049/https://www.wisconsincheesemart.com/products/gouda-cheese-smoked), where the same wording has been present since at least 2020:
> “Gouda is a Dutch cheese named after the city of Gouda in the Netherlands. It is one of the most popular cheeses in the world, accounting for 50 to 60 percent of the world’s cheese consumption. Smoked Gouda is a variant of this famous cheese, smoked in brick ovens over flaming hickory chip embers. This sweet curd is similar to Edam except that it contains more milk fat, which gives it a creamier texture and causes it to become more buttery with age. Sensational with beer, this cow’s milk cheese has an edible, smoky brown rind and a creamy, yellow interior.”

To complicate matters further, Gemini was not even released until three years after this text was first published. Yet, in the ad, it is implied that Gemini created the description.
The situation worsens when one considers that the same ad needed to be [quietly modified](https://mashable.com/article/google-ai-super-bowl-commercial-hallucination-fix) after it was discovered that a statistic provided by Gemini—asserting that gouda is the most widely consumed cheese globally—was incorrect.
In conclusion, the sole accurate portion of Gemini’s output was actually authored by a human long before, while the one true contribution from the AI proved to be erroneous. If Google aims to showcase generative AI effectively, there must be a more appropriate approach.
