Google is launching a new experiment within its Labs testing environment, centering on AI-generated Audio Overviews for search inquiries.
Driven by the newest Gemini models, this feature activates for more intricate or nuanced subjects, such as “what is the significance of the element Argon,” as opposed to straightforward questions like “what’s the weather today.” A “Generate Audio Overview” button will be visible, and after approximately 40 seconds, you will receive a fully narrated summary. The audio is based on leading search results and offers a conversational recap featuring two voices for an engaging experience.
Users are able to modify the playback speed, and the tool credits the webpages from which it gathers information.
Although this marks the initial introduction of Audio Overviews in Search, the feature has been available in Google’s NotebookLM, where it is more sophisticated, enabling users to pose follow-up questions and delve deeper in real-time. Currently, Audio Overviews in Search can only be accessed as an opt-in experiment through Google Labs.
