Users of Google Nest are facing a prevalent issue: the voice command “turn off the lights” is not operating as expected. A writer from Android Authority highlighted this concern, and many Reddit users have echoed similar troubles. Certain Google Home users can manage individual lights but struggle with groups, while others find that single bulbs do not respond. Furthermore, Google devices occasionally do not distinguish between lights located in separate rooms. The problem seems confined to Assistant voice commands, as most users indicate that controls function properly within the Google Home app.
Google has recognized the issue on r/googlehome, stating, “Hey all, We’re aware of an issue with using voice commands to control some lights. We’ll share an update as soon as possible, thanks for your patience.”
These grievances arise amidst backlash from Google Home users about the “enshittification” of Google Home devices, with Redditors mentioning bugs, delays, and the degradation of fundamental features. Anish Kattukaran, Chief Product Officer of Google Home and Nest, responded to these worries in July, promising users that Google is “actively working on significant enhancements” and pledging more updates in the upcoming months.
The state of Google Home devices might be deteriorating. Tech Radar reports that the US law firm Kaplan Gore is looking into a potential class action against Google for “failing to address mounting issues with its Google Home ‘smart home’ service.” The firm is gathering user complaints regarding problems such as “unrecognized voice commands, and automations and routines not working.”
