Google Upgrades Gemini Chatbot with Memory Features, Surpassing Anthropic

In February, Google launched a memory feature for Gemini that allowed it to remember previous conversations. Now, Google has debuted a more customized chat feature known as Personal Context. This function enables Gemini to acquire user preferences over time and adapt its responses accordingly.

“The Gemini app can now access your prior chats to understand your preferences, providing more tailored responses the more you engage with it,” remarked Gemini app senior director Michael Siliski in a blog announcement.

Gemini will retain your preferences and use them in future recommendations. For example, if you reference your favorite comic book and subsequently look for themed party ideas, it might propose that comic book as a theme, along with associated food and gaming suggestions.

This improvement builds upon the existing memory capabilities. Previously, users needed to prompt Gemini to refer back to earlier conversations, which was not always effective. Now, Gemini continuously learns and replies without needing explicit prompts, enhancing its personalization over time.

This update gives Gemini a competitive edge over Anthropic, which recently introduced a chat memory feature for its Claude chatbot. Claude’s memory necessitates direct prompts to refer to past discussions, unlike the upgraded Gemini.

Google is beginning to roll out Personal Context today, with a full deployment anticipated in a few weeks. Initially accessible in Gemini 2.5 Pro in select nations, it will soon broaden to Gemini 2.5 Flash and other areas.
