In May, at its annual Google I/O event, Google unveiled a new product known as the “Android XR glasses,” but did not provide extensive information regarding the specifications or the release timeline.
Now, Google is prepared to share additional insights. In a blog entry, the company explained that it is, in fact, working on two distinct types of smart glasses, both developed in partnership with Samsung, Gentle Monster, and Warby Parker.
The initial product is termed “AI glasses,” which do not have a display. Rather, they come equipped with a built-in speaker, microphones, and a camera, enabling interaction with Google’s AI assistant Gemini and facilitating photo capture. If this resembles Meta’s Ray-Ban glasses, you are correct. Google mentioned that these glasses will be released “next year.”
The second product is somewhat more captivating. Google simply refers to them as “display AI glasses,” which were referenced in May. These glasses come with an in-lens display that can privately present information such as turn-by-turn navigation, translation captions, and more.
The display is exclusively visible to the user.
The company also presented a couple of brief videos showcasing the display AI glasses in operation. However, Google did not specify a launch date for the glasses featuring the built-in display.
Both varieties of glasses will run on Google’s Android XR, an operating system crafted for “extended reality devices,” including headsets and smart glasses. The first Android XR headset is the Samsung Galaxy XR, which was launched in October 2025.
