Google’s AI Mode Can Make Reservations on Your Behalf… Kind Of

Google Search’s AI Mode now supports restaurant bookings, helping you navigate to the reservation page. On Thursday, Google revealed new “agentic capabilities” for AI Mode, including assistance with reservations, with additional features on the horizon. AI Mode is available in the U.S., UK, and India, and is set to expand to over 180 countries and territories, currently offered only in English.

Claims stating “Google Search’s new AI Mode can now reserve tables for you” are somewhat misleading. Within AI Mode, you can articulate your dinner reservation preferences, such as the number of diners, dietary needs, date, time, and type of cuisine. Google’s AI models then scan the internet to generate a list of restaurants with available reservations that fit your specifications. After finding a fitting reservation, AI Mode leads you to the booking page.

The reservation optimization feature in AI Mode was soft-launched in Labs, Google’s platform for AI testing, and is available exclusively to AI Ultra subscribers in the U.S. This suggests Google’s intent to roll out more agentic features in the near future. The announcement included mentions of future capabilities for booking event tickets and local service appointments. Google is forming partnerships with companies like OpenTable, Resy, Tock, Ticketmaster, StubHub, SeatGeek, and Booksy to facilitate these suggestions.

The agentic nature of this feature means employing sophisticated AI models to perform research on your behalf. However, it does not finalize the reservation for you; users must verify bookings through third-party services like Resy. While you can look for reservations directly on sites such as Resy or OpenTable, this feature consolidates options from multiple platforms and the web, presenting available reservation times.

The advent of the agentic web seeks to automate monotonous tasks and research, delegating them to customized AI assistants. If AI tools realize this potential, they could revolutionize our online interactions. This is an initial sign of agentic AI’s advancement on the web.

Google AI Ultra subscribers, who pay $250 each month, can explore agentic reservation booking in Search Labs by opting for “Agentic capabilities in AI Mode.”
