Google’s NotebookLM Now Features Visuals

Google’s NotebookLM AI tool now enables video generation. On Tuesday, Google revealed the launch of Video Overviews, providing a visual substitute for its podcast-like audio format.

Introduced last year, NotebookLM is an AI educational instrument that employs AI “podcast hosts” to discuss subjects in a conversational style, based on uploaded materials. It also produces mind maps and research documents.

Now, users have the capability to create visual presentations or “narrative slides” from their provided sources. A variety of files including audio recordings, PDFs, images, and websites can be uploaded, and the AI host produces visuals, integrating images, diagrams, quotations, and statistics from the documents. Essentially, it functions as an AI-created PowerPoint presentation derived from your uploads.

Google noted that presentations can be tailored to learning objectives and intended audiences. Video Overviews are currently available in English, with additional languages to be added later.

NotebookLM is meant for all users, with students being a primary audience, particularly with the new academic year on the horizon. This tool is part of Google’s latest AI initiatives focused on education. Furthermore, Google announced updates to AI Mode in Search, including a Canvas workspace for study materials, PDF interaction, and Chrome screensharing for discussions in AI Mode.

OpenAI is also improving its educational resources, unveiling Study Mode that utilizes ChatGPT as a Socratic method instructor. As summer concludes, both Google and OpenAI are establishing themselves as valuable resources for homework help and beyond.
