In her first feature film, New Zealand filmmaker Sasha Rainbow presents a spine-tingling story about an “ugly duckling” who seeks to reshape herself through experimental science to become the swan she dreams of — or, more precisely, our nightmares.

The film features Joyena Sun as Wei, a Chinese scholarship student relocating to New Zealand to pursue medical research at a top university. Although academically gifted, Wei faces significant insecurities due to a facial birthmark, making her an easy target for her cruel and stylish cousin Angela (played by Jess Hong). In her desperation to alter her looks, Wei immerses herself in her late father’s skin-grafting research, initiating a dark and twisted path of envy, obsession, and self-discovery.

The trailer indicates that Sasha Rainbow employs a daring and visceral take on body horror, a style that has already generated considerable excitement for *Grafted* on the film festival circuit.
