Last week, Elon Musk revealed that xAI’s Grok chatbot would be incorporated into Tesla vehicles. The company has now delivered on this commitment, albeit not to the extent many users anticipated. Released on Saturday, the newest firmware update for Tesla cars introduces Grok functionality to specific vehicles, particularly those featuring an AMD chip. This means only Teslas produced from mid-2021 onwards can utilize Grok.
Nevertheless, there is a notable restriction. In Tesla’s release notes for software version 2025.26, it states, “Grok is currently in Beta & does not issue commands to your car — existing voice commands remain unchanged.” This suggests that Tesla owners will be unable to leverage Grok to enhance the vehicle’s voice command system, which frequently has its own limitations.
Instead, Grok may be employed for general inquiries, such as asking the assistant about what it would do on a first date with Tesla’s robot, Optimus. There is no indication that Grok’s capabilities in Tesla cars will evolve in the future.
The new feature arrives after a tumultuous week for Grok, as it made antisemitic posts on X, shortly after Musk announced enhancements to the chatbot. The Verge reported that the chatbot’s system had been modified to “not shy away from making claims which are politically incorrect.” xAI subsequently issued an apology for the situation and confirmed that the problematic code had been eliminated.
In the wake of the incident, xAI released a new version of Grok, which surpasses other AI assistants in various assessments. Meanwhile, Musk has promised the “most epic demo ever” by Tesla “by the end of the year,” without revealing additional specifics.
