Hamilton TikTok Phenomenon Gains Popularity as Musical Marks 10th Anniversary

Lin-Manuel Miranda is a personality who inspires a diverse array of opinions. Some view him as a once-in-a-generation talent, while others regard him as rather cringe-inducing. The more discerning critics (like myself) argue that he encapsulates both perspectives. Nevertheless, this is of little importance to the thousands of TikTok users who are jumping on a new trend stemming from his 2015 musical, Hamilton.

This trend mainly showcases young women who curate ensembles reminiscent of the early 1800s, portraying Alexander Hamilton and performing Miranda’s role in the song “Best of Wives and Best of Women.” Often, these TikTok Hamiltons are seen trying to stealthily exit someone’s home at night, annoyed by their curious partner who is holding them up.

While everyone is thriving in this trend, my top pick is a video from Becca Bastos, or @actressbecc, whose reaction to Eliza’s line “come back to sleep” continually plays in my thoughts. Her video has amassed over 3.3 million views.

A strong runner-up is a piece by @_ashbyflorence_, who is also gaining popularity for an exceptional portrayal of The Lorax.

In response, men have begun to take on Eliza’s role in the song.

This trend aligns with Hamilton making its return to theaters for its 10th anniversary this year.
