Halloween comes early to Netflix with the new animated series “Haunted Hotel,” merging elements of “The Shining” with a family sitcom atmosphere.
Crafted by “Rick and Morty” writer Matt Roller, the series takes place in the Undervale, a hotel brimming with ghosts rather than guests. Single mom Katherine (voiced by Eliza Coupe) oversees the Undervale alongside her kids Ben (Skyler Gisondo) and Esther (Natalie Palamides). Katherine’s estranged brother Nathan (Will Forte), who happens to be a ghost, is convinced that the hotel’s supernatural inhabitants have brilliant ideas for managing the establishment, contrary to Katherine’s wishes.
The initial trailer for “Haunted Hotel” highlights the Undervale’s spooky residents, featuring Abaddon (Jimmi Simpson), a demon confined in the body of a young Victorian boy. Additional inhabitants include sudsy demons, a zombie, a luminous anglerfish, and a ghostly party. With all this ectoplasm swirling around, Katherine encounters difficulties in running a thriving business while ensuring her children’s safety from possession.
Alongside Roller, “Haunted Hotel” has much of its creative team from “Rick and Morty.” Dan Harmon and Steve Levy, recognized for “Rick and Morty” and “Community,” co-executive produce with Roller and Chris McKenna, while Erica Hayes, the first female director for “Rick and Morty,” takes on the role of supervising director.
“Haunted Hotel” debuts on Netflix on Sept. 19.
