Hinge, the well-known dating application, has launched a new feature named Prompt Feedback, aimed at assisting users in creating more unique and compelling answers to its distinctive prompts. This initiative positions Hinge as the latest dating service to adopt artificial intelligence (AI) in its offerings, following similar innovations by rivals such as Grindr, which is experimenting with an AI “wingman,” and Bumble, which recently introduced AI-generated icebreakers.
### What is Prompt Feedback?
Diverging from other AI applications that provide responses for users, Prompt Feedback employs a different strategy. It does not dictate what users should write or propose specific phrasing. Rather, it delivers constructive critiques on their replies across three categories:
1. **”Great Answer”** – No modifications necessary; the reply is satisfactory as it stands.
2. **”Try a Small Change”** – Prompts slight adjustments to enhance the response.
3. **”Go a Little Deeper”** – Recommends incorporating additional details to enrich the answer.
This evaluation remains confidential and is visible when users edit their profile prompts. They can then choose to modify their responses based on the feedback or retain them as they are.
### Why Focus on Prompts?
The prompts on Hinge are a defining aspect of the app, with statistics indicating that likes on prompts are 47% more likely to result in a date compared to likes on images. Nevertheless, a survey conducted by Hinge indicated that 63% of users find it challenging to determine what to include in their profiles, often leading to clichéd, one-word, or overused replies. Prompt Feedback aims to guide users away from these stereotypes and promote more thoughtful, individualized answers.
“We’re all familiar with dating app clichés like ‘pineapple on pizza’ or being ‘overly competitive about… everything,'” stated Logan Ury, Hinge’s director of relationship science, in the announcement. “While these responses are prevalent, they frequently do not reflect the uniqueness and creativity that foster meaningful discussions. By formulating prompt responses that emphasize your distinctive traits and genuine personality, you can aid potential matches in discovering the real you.”
### Addressing Dating App Fatigue
Hinge’s new feature is part of a larger initiative to tackle dating app fatigue, a concern the company is actively working to remedy. Last year, Hinge’s founder and CEO Justin McLeod recognized the exhaustion many singles face with dating applications and expressed that the company is dedicated to seeking solutions. For example, Hinge has recently implemented a cap on unanswered messages to promote more deliberate exchanges between matches.
With Prompt Feedback, Hinge is harnessing AI to enhance the dating journey and reduce feelings of exhaustion. Unlike other AI tools that compose messages for users, this feature provides personalized guidance to assist users in making a strong first impact with their profiles.
“With Prompt Feedback, we’re deliberately using AI to offer tailored coaching during a critical moment for daters crafting an impressive introduction on their profiles,” McLeod elaborated. “For years, our research team has pinpointed what aids individuals in finding compatibility that leads to dates, and now daters can utilize these insights through specific, customized advice.”
By adopting AI in a manner that amplifies user creativity instead of substituting it, Hinge aspires to help users differentiate themselves and cultivate deeper relationships.
