In its most recent report, Hinge disclosed that singles are increasingly utilizing AI for dating, aligning with contemporary trends. Earlier this year, the dating platform rolled out AI-driven prompt feedback to aid users in creating enhanced profiles.
Now, Hinge is introducing Convo Starters, yet another AI feature aimed at assisting daters in beginning conversations. Convo Starters offers tailored suggestions for initiating a dialogue based on a potential match’s prompt replies and images, surfacing when a user likes someone else.
Daters will obtain three distinct suggestions, prompting them to inquire, share thoughts, or voice opinions. These Convo Starters are optional, allowing users to turn the feature on or off in their settings. Users will also compose messages in their distinctive tone.
“We’ve received feedback from daters that uncertainty about what to say can prevent them from sending a message altogether,” remarked Hinge’s president and CMO, Jackie Jantos, in a press release distributed to Mashable. “With Convo Starters, we’re alleviating that tension. By providing gentle guidance rooted in someone’s profile, we’re assisting daters in initiating meaningful, genuine conversations that demonstrate real interest — and bringing them closer to a wonderful first date.”
Considering that Hinge recently found that Gen Z daters face more challenges in starting profound conversations compared to millennials, this new feature arrives at an opportune moment.
The AI-driven feature is now accessible in the U.S. In addition to utilizing generative AI, Convo Starters also integrates insights from Hinge’s research team and behavioral scientists, as highlighted in the press release.
Hinge stressed that both Convo Starters and Prompt Feedback do not provide copy-and-paste replies for singles, adhering to the app’s AI tenets of transparency, authenticity, and equality.
Hinge is not the sole app incorporating AI into its platform. Prior to rebranding to Bumble BFF, Bumble for Friends unveiled a comparable feature to Convo Starters — AI icebreakers — in 2023. Furthermore, Tinder is experimenting with an AI matching feature named Chemistry, scheduled for release next year.
