The Times attributes the innovation of this word game to associate puzzle editor Wyna Liu, who played a pivotal role in introducing it to the publication’s Games section. Connections is playable on both web browsers and mobile devices, requiring participants to categorize four words that have something in common.

Each puzzle consists of 16 words, and every grouping is divided into four categories. These sets can include various types of items, such as book titles, software, country names, etc. While many words may appear to fit together, there is only one correct combination.

If a player correctly identifies all four words in a particular set, those words are removed from the screen. A wrong guess counts as an error—players can make up to four mistakes before the game concludes.
