What is Connections?

The NYT‘s newest daily word challenge has taken social media by storm. The Times acknowledges associate puzzle editor Wyna Liu for her role in developing the game and introducing it to the Games section. Connections can be enjoyed on both web browsers and mobile devices, requiring players to group four words that share a commonality.

Each puzzle features 16 words organized into four categories. These categories may consist of anything from book names to software or country designations. While several words might appear to link together, only one combination is the right one.

If a player successfully spots all four words in a category, those words are removed from the board. A wrong guess counts as a mistake—players are allowed up to four mistakes before the game concludes.

Players have the option to shuffle and rearrange the board to discover connections more effectively. Each group is color-coded: yellow indicates the easiest level, followed by green, blue, and purple. Similar to Wordle, results can be shared with friends via social media.
