How to Boost the Speed of an Instagram Reel

**Instagram Reels Unveils 2x Speed Playback, Following in TikTok’s Footsteps**

It’s not surprising that Instagram Reels continues to draw ideas from TikTok in almost every aspect. From looping videos to the arrangement of like, comment, and share buttons, Reels closely resembles TikTok’s layout. Yet, a significant feature that had been absent—enabling users to accelerate videos while viewing—has finally made its debut.

Now, Instagram Reels users are able to increase the playback speed of a video to double with a straightforward technique that TikTok enthusiasts will recognize. By pressing and holding on either side of the video, the speed will ramp up. Unlike TikTok, which restricts this function to the right side of the screen, Reels users have the option to press on either the right or left side to achieve the same result. Just as on TikTok, the video will only stay at an accelerated speed as long as the user continues to press and hold.

The capability to view videos at 2x speed has gained popularity across multiple platforms, including YouTube, TikTok, and even films. While some might consider the practice odd, research indicates it doesn’t adversely affect understanding. A 2022 report referenced by Mashable deputy UK editor Sam Haysom revealed that students who viewed educational videos at increased speeds performed equally well on assessments as those who watched at standard speed.

“I was astonished by how effectively students learn at 2X and even 2.5X speed,” researcher Murphy shared with Mashable at the time. “Our findings showed that students are efficient learners and can absorb information even under conditions that traditional beliefs might deem less than ideal. Given students’ capacity to adjust, this approach could very well improve their comprehension.”

Whether this trend will affect face-to-face communication remains unclear. Nevertheless, for those keen to zip through old movie trailers or swiftly revisit TikToks on Reels, this new feature is a welcome enhancement.
