Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is set for a shift in tone. Recognized for his larger-than-life persona and captivating action-comedy roles, The Smashing Machine showcases him in a more serious, dramatic part as MMA fighter Mark Kerr.
It made its world debut at the 2025 Venice International Film Festival, followed by a screening at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival, where Mashable’s film editor, Kristy Puchko, evaluated the film. It received mainly favorable reviews, garnering much acclaim for Johnson’s portrayal. The film also features Emily Blunt as Kerr’s partner Dawn, Ryan Bader as UFC champion Mark Coleman, and Oleksandr Usyk as MMA fighter Igor Vovchanchyn.
If you missed it in theaters, you can now view The Smashing Machine at home. Here’s everything you need to know to watch — including its streaming availability and schedule.
What is The Smashing Machine about?
Crafted and helmed by Benny Safdie (Uncut Gems), The Smashing Machine narrates the true story of MMA fighter Mark Kerr (Johnson) during the initial years of the UFC in the ’90s. It spans several years, taking the audience to Japan for the Pride FC competition and back to the U.S. for training. It explores his personal battles and tumultuous love affair with Dawn Staples (Blunt) as he aims to excel in the ring.

Is The Smashing Machine worth watching?
While The Smashing Machine may not have triumphed at the box office, Johnson’s metamorphosis into Mark Kerr and his performance alone render it worthwhile. The film secured the Silver Lion at the Venice International Film Festival and boasts a 70 percent critic score and a 75 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Mashable’s own reviewer states, “Ultimately, Johnson delivers a career-defining performance that demonstrates he can tackle weightier, even more artistic content. Blunt invests fully in a challenging role, and Safdie, directing his feature-length debut without his brother and Uncut Gems co-director Josh Safdie, takes ambitious risks. It’s unfortunate he lacked a clearer vision of what resonated and what left the audience wanting more.”
