Director Alex Garland returns to the frontlines with his latest film, Warfare, co-written and co-directed alongside Iraq War veteran Ray Mendoza. The sequel to the Civil War immerses viewers in the realities of the brutally intense Iraq War, circa 2006.

For those who missed its theatrical release, there are several ways to enjoy Warfare at home. Here’s what you need to know to tune in.

What is Warfare about?

Inspired by a real mission in Ramadi, Iraq, Warfare showcases a platoon of American Navy SEALs on a mission that derails in enemy territory. It’s a raw and compelling exploration of the dangers of modern warfare and camaraderie. Expect no political commentary or neatly wrapped-up endings. As Mashable’s critic describes, the boots-on-the-ground view creates an “agonizing portrait of the perils of war, its demands on young soldiers, and the unforgiving nature of combat.”

Or, in the words of co-director and co-writer Ray Mendoza, “Reality doesn’t give people any breaks.”

Is Warfare worth viewing?

With an impressive 93 percent rating from critics and audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s evident that A24’s Warfare has struck a chord with viewers. However, it might not resonate with everyone.

“It’s a homage to the courage displayed in battle by a group of young Navy SEALs and a harsh immersion into the gritty truths of war, gore included,” writes Mashable’s reviewer, Monica Castillo. She remarks that while she appreciates the film’s honesty, it left her conflicted regarding her feelings.

“I flinched at the sight of limbs hanging like shattered dolls, drenched in deep crimson from blood. War is hell, and if you held any other misconceptions, Warfare should clarify the reality,” Castillo adds.
