Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis are back. After captivating audiences in theaters this summer, Freakier Friday is officially arriving on the small screen this season.

In the follow-up to the beloved 2003 body-swap comedy Freaky Friday, another magical body-swap enchantment is in play. This time, there’s double the craziness, with Sophia Hammons and Julia Butters added to the cast. Directed by Nisha Ganatra, Freakier Friday features the mother-daughter protagonists we cherish (Curtis’ Dr. Tess Coleman and Lohan’s Anna Coleman) swapping bodies with a pair of quarreling teens, leading to a hilarious generational clash and comedic mayhem.

If you missed it in theaters or eagerly want to see it again, you’ll be delighted to find that the sequel is now ready for home viewing. Here’s what you need to know.

What is Freakier Friday about?

Set two decades after Freaky Friday, Freakier Friday follows an adult Anna Coleman (Lohan), a 36-year-old single mother to Harper (Butters), managing the insecure pop star Ella (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan). She’s engaged to chef Eric (Manny Jacinto), who has a daughter, Lily (Hammons). Harper and Lily are high school rivals and will stop at nothing to separate their parents. With the wedding nearing, the women — including Dr. Tess Coleman (Curtis), a therapist/podcaster/author and Harper’s grandparent — are at their breaking point with each other. Enter a whimsical fortune teller/life coach/barista, played by Vanessa Bayer, to cast the magical body-swap spell.

Is the Freaky Friday sequel worth watching?

Freakier Friday was a box office success this summer, debuting with a $29 million domestic opening weekend ($153 million worldwide). It set the record for the highest August opening for a PG-rated or G-rated film. Quite impressive for a sequel. Much of this success comes from glowing word of mouth. It currently boasts a 74 percent critic rating and a remarkable 91 percent audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Mashable’s reviewer states, “Ultimately, Freakier Friday doesn’t surpass the original. However, it is enjoyable, entertaining, and humorous. In addition to the excellent performances of Curtis and Lohan, there’s a meta joy in seeing a real-life wild child return to her roots for a victory lap. The fact that she gets to rock out while doing so is even better.”
