What about another horror legacy sequel to wrap up the summer? The hook-wielding murderer from the beloved ’90s slasher flick returns to haunt a fresh set of attractive young friends harboring a dark secret. The newest installment of I Know What You Did Last Summer is more than just a reboot — it’s a sequel featuring some memorable faces. The iconic Freddie Prinze Jr. and Jennifer Love Hewitt reprise their roles to tap into our shared affection for ’90s nostalgia and slasher genres.
I Know What You Did Last Summer also features Madelyn Cline, Chase Sui Wonders, Jonah Hauer-King, Tyriq Withers, Sarah Pidgeon, Billy Campbell, Gabbriette Bechtel, and Austin Nichols.
The sequel slash reboot premiered in theaters in July and is officially available for home viewing as of Aug. 26. Here’s all you need to know about watching it — including when and where it’s streaming and how you can save money while watching.
What is I Know What You Did Last Summer about?
Part reboot, part sequel, I Know What You Did Last Summer follows the original 1997 movie’s fundamental storyline. In the coastal town of Southport, North Carolina, a group of teenagers unintentionally kills someone and keeps it a secret. They believe they have escaped justice until a mysterious figure in a hood starts stalking them with a fish hook. This time, however, the guilt-ridden teens seek assistance from survivors of the original film — Julie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) and Ray (Freddie Prinze Jr.).

Is I Know What You Did Last Summer worth your time?
Still showing in select theaters, the slasher legacy sequel has generated about $64 million globally at the box office. Even though it has done well against a reported budget of $17 million, it has struggled to connect with viewers compared to other legacy sequels like 28 Years Later and Final Destination: Bloodlines. The reviews are mostly average, holding a 37 percent critic rating and 68 percent audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. To be fair, the original also received relatively low ratings.
For what it’s worth, Mashable’s reviewer had mostly positive remarks about I Know What You Did Last Summer. In his critique, Jason Adams praised, “In this instance, Robinson’s film leans into the entertaining aspects of horror legacy, playing to the strengths of the ’90s original while introducing surprises for a new audience. It’s all a learning experience: When life stabs you, you strike a pose in your designer jeans and vintage rock tee and retaliate fiercely, baby.”
