In 2023, Celine Song established herself as a rising star in relationship dramas with her Academy Award-nominated debut feature Past Lives. By 2025, her second film, Materialists, has viewers captivated by yet another love triangle. This time, she features a cast that has gone viral, including Pedro Pascal, Chris Evans, and Dakota Johnson.
A24 showcased exemplary marketing during the summer with Materialists, aiding its unexpected box office success. If you missed the star-studded romantic comedy in theaters, it is now officially available for streaming. Here’s what you need to know to watch — including when and where to view it, and the most affordable way to do so.
What is Materialists about?
According to A24’s logline: “An ambitious young matchmaker in New York City finds herself conflicted between her ideal match and her flawed ex.” Lucy (Johnson) is the matchmaker aiding other couples to achieve their happy endings, while referring to herself as an “everlasting bachelorette.” Naturally, that is about to shift when two suitors enter her life: Harry (Pascal), a wealthy and charming bachelor eager to win her over, and John (Evans), Lucy’s equally appealing ex-boyfriend, seeking a second chance.

Is Materialists worth watching?
“On paper, Materialists is flawless,” writes Kristy Puchko from Mashable in her critique. “It presents a romantic comedy love triangle, led by three major stars that the internet is obsessed with: Chris Evans, Dakota Johnson, and Pedro Pascal.” If you’re a fan of these actors, that’s enough motivation to watch. However, as Puchko points out, it’s challenging to separate the larger-than-life public images of the actors from the roles they are portraying. “While aiming for authenticity, it’s difficult to ignore its dazzling stars,” she remarks.
Materialists performed well at the global box office, likely due to its notable cast, with mostly positive reviews. It maintains a 78 percent critic score and a 66 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, with a consensus recognizing Song as a “modern master of relationship dramas.”
