Sarah Bond’s Journey to Xbox Leadership Is Anything but Typical — and That’s Precisely Why It Works
Sarah Bond may not have taken the conventional route to ascend to the presidency of Xbox, but her distinct path is exactly what makes her an exceptional leader in the gaming sector.
Bond launched her career as a consultant at McKinsey & Company before transitioning to T-Mobile, where she held the position of chief of staff to then-CEO John Legere. In 2017, she became part of Xbox, a branch of Microsoft Gaming. At first glance, her background might not shout “future gaming executive,” yet Bond has demonstrated her comprehension of both the creative essence and the business dynamics of the industry.
She was instrumental in Microsoft’s 2022 acquisition of Activision Blizzard — a transaction that encountered regulatory challenges but ultimately succeeded. Additionally, Bond has been a staunch advocate for making gaming more inclusive and accessible, particularly as the industry faces slower growth and rising competition.
Her achievements are remarkable any time of the year, but they appear especially impactful during Women’s History Month, a moment to contemplate gender inequalities in male-dominated arenas like gaming.
A Lifelong Gamer
Bond’s bond with gaming initiated at a young age. At merely six years old, she was engaged in playing King’s Quest II on the family PC alongside her father. As she matured, classics like Sonic the Hedgehog and GoldenEye 007 became beloved favorites. Today, she shares that enthusiasm with her own family, frequently enjoying Minecraft Dungeons with her husband and two children during family game nights.
Upon first joining Xbox, Bond perceived the company’s products through the lens of consumer technology. Gradually, her viewpoint broadened as she led teams dedicated to enhancing the Xbox platform and aiding independent developers.
“It’s this splendid blend of art and science in creativity… that I find profoundly invigorating,” she remarks about the gaming realm.
A Broader Outlook
As a Black woman in an environment that hasn’t always embraced women or individuals of color, Bond offers a critical and insightful perspective. The 2015 Gamergate incident, which highlighted issues of representation and harassment within gaming, illuminated the obstacles faced by underrepresented factions in the industry. These challenges endure today, particularly as political discussions regarding diversity, equity, and inclusion become increasingly heated.
When Bond commenced her journey at Xbox, Phil Spencer, head of Xbox Gaming, provided her with a frank warning about the industry’s harsh culture. She recalled responding with a powerful insight: “Phil, my aunt passed away yesterday. She was a colonel in the Army during the era of segregation. That was difficult.”
Bond attributes her resilience and achievements to the generations that came before her. “There is no individual accomplishment,” she asserts. “We are all the result of the individuals who shaped us, invested in us, and nurtured us.” She aspires for her story to motivate others, just as her aunt’s perseverance inspired her.
Work-Life Balance and Continuous Learning
Bond does not subscribe to the notion of burning out to achieve success. Rather, she emphasizes mindfulness and self-care, utilizing meditation and breaks to sustain top performance. “This is absolutely my way of optimizing performance,” she clarifies. “Sometimes to deliver my very best, I need to pause.”
She also advocates for taking risks instead of striving for perfection. A crucial lesson arose during her time at Yale, when she memorized answers for a Spanish exam and received an “A” — only to discover during a trip to Spain that she couldn’t genuinely converse in the language. That experience taught her that authentic learning stems from pushing limits, not playing it safe.
“The method I used to study for Spanish was the biggest lesson of my life,” she shares.
Words of Wisdom for the Future Generation
In a tech landscape increasingly characterized by what Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg refers to as “masculine energy,” Bond conveys an important message to girls and women aiming to enter STEM fields: Identify mentors who provoke your thinking and believe in your capabilities.
Some individuals, she cautions, may undervalue women or regard them as fragile. The essential part is to find those who will invest in your advancement and maintain high expectations.
“Pursue the individuals who are going to invest in you, because those people are invaluable,” Bond advises.
