I believed I had optimized my iPhone camera settings simply because I owned the newest model — the [iPhone 16 Pro Max](https://mashable.com/review/iphone-16-pro-iphone-16-pro-max). Nevertheless, I was soon humbled when I observed Mashable’s skilled photographer, Joe Maldonado, capturing images with a meticulously adjusted [iPhone 14 Pro](https://mashable.com/review/apple-iphone-14-pro-review). Even though both of us photographed the same scenes, his images were clearly crisper, sharper, and more vibrant than mine.
What was my error?
Initially, I speculated that my lens was smudged. However, even after I wiped it with a microfiber cloth, Maldonado’s pictures still eclipsed mine. Ultimately, I had to inquire, “How is your [iPhone 14 Pro](https://mashable.com/review/apple-iphone-14-pro-review) producing superior images compared to my iPhone 16 Pro Max?”
“It’s all about the settings,” Maldonado responded.
### Top iPhone Camera Settings, As Advised by an Expert
Do you want to maximize the photo quality from your iPhone? Adhere to these steps, thanks to pro photographer Maldonado, and express your gratitude later.
#### Total Time: 5 minutes
#### What You Need:
– An iPhone (ideally a recent Pro model)
#### Step 1: Navigate to ‘Settings’
#### Step 2: Select ‘Camera’
#### Step 3: Choose ‘Formats’
You’ll see “Formats” located between “Record Sound” and “Preserve Settings.”
#### Step 4: Ensure These 3 Settings Are Activated
Verify that “High Efficiency” under Camera Capture is selected, “24 MP” under Photo Mode is enabled, and “ProRAW & Resolution Control” is activated.
#### Step 5: Select ‘Pro Default’
Confirm there’s a checkmark next to “ProRAW Max (Up to 48MP)” and “JPEG-XL Lossy” (the latter is available only for the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max).
#### Step 6: Go Back to ‘Camera’ and Choose ‘Preserve Settings’
Turn on the following: Camera Mode, Creative Controls, Macro Control, Exposure Adjustment, Night Mode, Portrait Zoom, ProRAW & Resolution Control, and Live Photo. This guarantees that your settings are retained each time you launch the Camera app.
#### Step 7: Return to the ‘Camera’ Menu
Activate ‘Grid’ and ‘Level’ to assist in aligning your shots. Also, ensure ‘Portraits in Photo Mode,’ ‘Prioritize Faster Shooting,’ ‘Lens Correction,’ and ‘Macro Control’ are turned on.
That’s all for the Settings app!
While you’re in the Camera app itself, Maldonado suggests activating “Raw MAX.” Additionally, when taking photos, be sure to utilize the “1x” zoom (the primary sensor, also recognized as the wide camera) for the highest-quality images.
Now that you’ve adjusted your iPhone settings, get out there and start capturing! Share in the comments if you see an improvement in your photos.
