Ikea Broadens Its Reach in Smart Home Technology with 21 Innovative Matter-over-Thread Products

Ikea has gained fame for its cafeteria meatballs, complicated assembly instructions, and now, its entry into smart home technology. Historically known for its cost-effective, self-assembly furniture, Ikea is venturing into technology, particularly smart home gadgets.

Ikea is launching a range of 21 new smart home products aimed at lighting, sensors, and controls. Every device will utilize Matter-over-Thread, guaranteeing compatibility with Apple HomePods and Google Homes.

Staying aligned with its low-cost principles, Ikea intends to make smart home technology widely available. “Until now, smart home technology hasn’t been user-friendly enough for most individuals — or affordable enough for many to consider. This launch brings us closer to enabling everyone to feel prepared and confident to embark on this journey,” remarks David Granath, Range Manager at Ikea of Sweden.

This is not Ikea’s initial foray into smart home technology. Previously, it provided built-in appliances such as air purifiers in side tables or speakers integrated into bookshelves. However, this is the first range featuring Matter-certified items.

Matter, created by the Connectivity Standards Alliance, enables any smart home device to interact with another, regardless of the manufacturer. This implies that your Google Home can link with your new Ikea light bulbs without requiring a new smart home hub.

Ikea’s devices will also utilize Thread connectivity, akin to WiFi connectivity.
