Instagram has chosen to eliminate its Content Notes feature just a few months following its launch due to minimal user interaction.
Content Notes enabled users to create private annotations for photos, Reels, or carousels visible only to their friends. However, according to Instagram’s leader Adam Mosseri, the feature did not achieve the desired popularity. In a recent update, Mosseri noted, *”We introduced Content Notes to enhance the social and enjoyable aspects of Instagram, but in reality, it just wasn’t embraced by many users.”*
In contrast to other feature eliminations that frequently provoke backlash, the reaction to this move has been largely apathetic or even positive. Several users confessed they were unaware that the feature existed, with comments on Mosseri’s post showcasing clapping emojis and statements like, *”I didn’t even realize I had Content Notes.”* Nonetheless, since Mosseri has restricted comments on his post, the complete sentiment may not be fully captured.
This tepid response mirrors reactions observed when the feature was initially released. On Reddit, one user expressed discontent, *”Is there a way to disable it? My feed is already cluttered, and I don’t want additional posts from accounts I don’t follow.”* Others concurred, pointing out worries that Instagram’s design had become excessively complex.
Mosseri recognized these worries, indicating that Instagram is dedicated to streamlining the platform by eliminating underused features. *”We understand Instagram has become overly complicated over the years. One method to tackle that is by removing features that lack sufficient engagement, and Content Notes is among them,”* he stated.
Though Content Notes is being retired, Mosseri assured users that Instagram will keep investigating new methods to boost social interactions on the platform.
