Apple is said to be preparing for a significant redesign of its iPhone operating system with iOS 19, representing the first major update since iOS 7 in 2013. In addition to iPhones, iPads and Macs are anticipated to undergo considerable upgrades with new operating systems.
As reported by Bloomberg, Apple has been developing “one of the most significant software transformations in the company’s history.” This update will feature a new visual aesthetic, which includes updated icons, reimagined menus, new system buttons, and modifications to app functionality.
The upcoming design—codenamed “Luck” for iOS and iPadOS, and “Cheer” for macOS 16—is believed to be influenced by the Apple Vision Pro. Apple seems to be focused on creating a more unified experience across its devices, facilitating easier transitions for users among different systems.
Bloomberg points out that Apple is optimistic that the redesign will create buzz and drive sales, particularly after the mixed feedback on the iPhone 16 series and Apple Intelligence.
This isn’t the first instance of speculation regarding a significant software redesign. Tech insider Jon Prosser had earlier suggested an iOS overhaul featuring circular icons and other alterations in a YouTube video. Bloomberg’s findings support these prior assertions, lending credibility to the rumors.
Luckily, users won’t have to wait too long for verification—Apple is set to reveal the updates at this year’s WWDC event in the summer.
