iOS 26.2 to Retire a Feature in Specific Areas

The latest iOS update will have a minor effect on Apple Watch users in the EU. Specifically, the automatic synchronization of WiFi networks between iPhones and Apple Watches will be diminished for EU users with the rollout of iOS 26.2, as reported by Numerama (via 9to5Mac). Typically, when paired with an iPhone, an Apple Watch gains access to all the WiFi networks saved on the phone. With iOS 26.2, EU users will perceive a change in this process.

Now, an Apple Watch will automatically connect to a WiFi network only if its paired iPhone is in proximity. If you visit a cafe with just your watch, you will have to manually input the WiFi password on the watch. This modification primarily influences users who often leave their homes with only their Apple Watch.

The rationale behind this change is to adhere to market regulations. The EU’s Digital Markets Act mandates that companies like Apple ensure interoperability with third-party devices. Apple is reluctant to comply, leading to a slight inconvenience for European users.
