We’ve been aware that Apple was set to release an iPhone 17 for quite some time now. However, following numerous leaks and speculated changes over the last few months, the Apple Event on Sept. 9 validated it all. You can now officially preorder every variant of the iPhone 17 through the three major phone carriers, Best Buy, or directly from Apple. Shipping commences on Sept. 19.

For Apple enthusiasts, September isn’t merely a month spent deciding between clinging to summer or succumbing to fall advertising. It’s also the season to deliberate on whether to keep your old iPhone or yield to the allure of a new iPhone. If you’re seriously contemplating making the switch this year, you have more choices available than in 2024: Apple has introduced four new iPhones (as opposed to three iPhone 16s) to select from: the standard iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Max, and the iPhone Air. Here’s how the pricing breaks down:

iPhone 17 (lavender, mist blue, sage, black, white) — starting at $799
iPhone Air (space black, sky blue, cloud white, light gold) — starting at $999
iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max (silver, deep blue, cosmic orange) — starting at $1,099

As more retailers begin to launch their preorder pages, we will link those here as well. Additionally, you can significantly save on your iPhone 17 upgrade when you trade in an iPhone 13 or newer in any state.

All new Apple devices disclosed

The AirPods Pro 3, Apple Watch Series 11, Apple Watch Ultra 3, and Apple Watch SE 3 were also revealed during the event and will be available for preorder on Sept. 12.

So, what distinguishes the iPhone 17 from the iPhone 16 that thoroughly impressed us last year? This time, Apple is being more generous with specifications across all price points: Each iPhone 17 variant boasts a 120Hz ProMotion display (not limited to the Pro models), achieving up to 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness.

And then there’s the elusive iPhone Air — it exists, and it’s unlike any iPhone you’ve previously held. At only 5.6 millimeters thick, the iPhone Air is remarkably lightweight yet remarkably sturdy. The singular rear camera design required a makeover reminiscent of the Google Pixel 10, yet it’s stylish nonetheless. Despite its compact form, the iPhone Air retains much of the processing power and all-day battery life of the other iPhone 17 variants.

However, to experience the most powerful iPhone of them all (by far, it seems), you’ll need to choose the iPhone 17 Pro. It is fueled by the A19 Pro chip and what Apple has termed the fastest CPU in any smartphone. Yet, increased power doesn’t necessarily equate to shorter battery life, as the iPhone 17 Pro Max is the first iPhone ever to feature a battery exceeding 5,000mAh capacity.

“Shot on iPhone” is about to acquire a new significance. The camera setup has experienced a substantial overhaul with the 17, showcasing selfie cameras up to 18MP (in contrast to the 12MP on previous iPhones) that automatically adjust orientation based on the content of the picture — no more flipping your camera sideways just to capture a lengthy group selfie. The iPhone 17 Pro models are also equipped with triple 48MP fusion cameras on the rear and an ultrawide lens boasting four times the resolution of that on the iPhone 16. During the event, the iPhone 17 Pro’s camera system was characterized as “the equivalent of eight Pro lenses in your pocket.”

Pre-orders for the new iPhone commenced on Sept. 12 and will continue until Sept. 19, when all iPhone 17 and iPhone Air models will start shipping.
