IT: Derry Episode 7 Conclusion Clarified: What Are the Army’s Intentions?

The series “IT: Welcome to Derry” is approaching its finale, with just one episode left, and the circumstances are rapidly worsening. Episode 7 not only explores Pennywise’s backstory and reimagines a chilling historical segment from the book, but it also concludes with a twist that endangers the main characters and potentially the entire United States.

In the episode’s peak moment, a catastrophic arson incident seemingly brings an end to the creature’s current spree of murders. Following Dick Hallorann’s guidance, the military discovers an ancient pillar that serves as a containment unit for the monster in Derry. Initially, Major Hanlon believes the pillar is intended to capture and kill the creature, but he soon realizes that the military’s actual goal is its annihilation.

General Shaw discloses that the army’s strategy is not to eliminate the creature but rather to set it free. Despite Pennywise’s record of murdering 17 children, Shaw contends that releasing IT is vital to avert another civil war in an increasingly fragmented America. He maintains that the dread instigated by Pennywise can govern the populace, referencing the tranquility in Derry following the horrific occurrences.

Despite Major Hanlon’s attempts, the army demolishes the pillar, rousing the creature from its rest. The army’s plan may not have been fully thought out.

New episodes of “IT: Welcome to Derry” broadcast Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on HBO and HBO Max.
