Fortnite Likely to Make a Comeback on iOS Very Soon
Fortnite could soon be returning to iOS devices in the U.S. — potentially within days.
Although nothing is officially confirmed at this moment, the chances of Fortnite making a comeback on the App Store have improved significantly. On Friday, the official Fortnite account on X (previously known as Twitter) revealed that the game has been submitted for review to Apple’s iOS App Store in the United States.
This news comes in the midst of the ongoing legal dispute between Epic Games and Apple — a conflict that could reportedly cost Apple up to $1 billion in lost App Store commissions, as stated in a recent article by The New York Times.
As Apple had previously revoked Epic’s U.S. developer account, Epic was required to submit Fortnite for review using its European developer credentials.
Per Apple’s developer guidelines, most apps generally undergo review within 24 hours. However, considering the prominent nature of Fortnite’s return and the legal history surrounding both companies, this particular review might take longer than the norm.
For those who might not be up to date: Fortnite has not been available on iPhones since 2020, when Apple took the game off the App Store. This removal resulted from Epic’s move to circumvent Apple’s 30% commission on in-app purchases, igniting a legal battle that developed into a significant antitrust issue.
That case recently reached a pivotal moment when Apple was found in contempt of court and required to halt collecting commissions on purchases made outside the app. This ruling has already created effects — for instance, users can now purchase books directly through the iOS Kindle app, which was not an option before.
With this legal win under its belt, Epic now feels sufficiently assured to reintroduce Fortnite to iOS. While there is no official timeline regarding when the game will receive approval and become available for download, Mashable will provide updates to readers as soon as it occurs.
