Being included in a shadowy criminal database that leads to your arrest is a chilling reality, yet it’s becoming more common for individuals in the U.S. The gang databases responsible are the central theme of this Sunday’s episode of *Last Week Tonight*, where John Oliver delves into topics ranging from people being classified as gang members because of harmless social media activity to outdated databases leading to arrests years after the fact.
“It’s clear that gang databases can be too easily added to, incredibly hard to be removed from, and can severely impact lives. So, what should our course of action be? I recommend we abolish them. If you’re asking, ‘How will law enforcement handle gang violence then?’ I suggest they pursue authentic police work. They could and should focus on regions where violence is rampant, rather than obsessing over labels,” Oliver asserts.
“I’m not disputing that gang-related violence exists or is an issue. I’m simply advocating that the solution must go beyond just policing and well past these databases.”
