If you’re a fan of the adrenaline-pumping universe of John Wick, be sure to note this new essential viewing.
A behind-the-scenes documentary named Wick Is Pain provides enthusiasts an exclusive glimpse into the creation of the legendary assassin series. The film takes you straight into the core of the Continental hotel and behind the lens of director Chad Stahelski’s action franchise led by Keanu Reeves, complete with canines and a heavy body count.
Directed by Jeffrey Doe, this documentary includes unique interviews with pivotal cast and crew members, such as Reeves, Stahelski, producers Erica Lee, Basil Iwanyk, and David Leitch. The trailer hints at a wealth of on-set action, featuring Reeves in his full John Wick persona. As his stunt double Jackson Spidell remarks, “When you see Keanu in pain onscreen, it’s probably for real.” And he’s not joking — Stahelski once genuinely struck Reeves with a car during production.
Wick Is Pain further explores the unexpected backstory of the franchise, unveiling that the original 2014 film — the one that launched everything with a puppy and a quest for revenge — almost didn’t come to fruition.
The documentary will debut at Beyond Fest at the American Cinematheque on May 8 and will be accessible for rent or purchase on digital platforms starting May 9.
