A few months into Donald Trump’s second term as president, Jon Stewart is examining his promise to bring “accountability” back to the White House. In a recent segment of The Daily Show, Stewart showcases a clip of Trump confidently stating, “The buck stops here.”
However, what follows is a montage of Trump distancing himself from a range of controversies. From the leaked Signal group chat involving government officials to the introduction of the TRUMP cryptocurrency coin, the president consistently claims he knows nothing.
“‘I don’t know much about it, other than I launched it,'” Stewart says, reflecting Trump’s words with incredulity. “Crypto coin, nuclear missiles—I don’t know much about it, I just launch ’em. ‘Hey, Mr. President, could you take this?’ ‘Yeah, what’s it to do with?’ ‘Just launch it.’ You begin to question: Does the buck stop anywhere with this guy?”
The segment continues with a lengthy compilation of Trump denying knowledge or involvement in various issues he’s asked about, evading responsibility at every opportunity.
“So many things that Trump apparently has no connection to!” Stewart exclaims. “Is it possible he’s been severed?” he jokes, alluding to the sci-fi series Severance. He then cuts to a clip of Trump dancing. “Is that what all the choreography and merriment is for?” he quips, mocking the president’s seemingly detached stance from his own administration’s actions.
