As Mashable’s Tech Editor, I evaluate numerous gadgets, but the Kindle Paperwhite was gifted to me (thanks, Mom). It was at the top of my Christmas wish list in 2024, and it’s the e-reader I suggest to friends and family. For Prime Day 2025, you can snag this e-reader for just $124.99, a new all-time low price, though I don’t think that’s the best choice.

Indeed, as Mashable’s Tech Editor, I can confirm that Kindle discounts like this are uncommon. Amazon only offers them during major shopping events, such as Prime Day and Black Friday. Yet, even with the Kindle Paperwhite available for $124.99, I believe you should consider spending $144.99 on the ad-free version. (Fortunately, the ad-free option is conveniently on sale for Prime Day.)

Let me explain. With no lockscreen ads, your Kindle’s lockscreen will showcase beautiful black-and-white images on the e-ink display. In contrast, the regular version will show ads for formulaic romance and fantasy novels. This isn’t to disparage classic bodice rippers or Big Foot fantasy tales (to each their own), but I prefer not to encounter yet another advertisement every time I pick up my e-reader.

I strongly advise spending the additional $20 to obtain the Kindle Paperwhite without lockscreen ads. The upside? Both models of this e-reader are at the lowest prices ever. For Prime Day 2025, Amazon has made each version $5 cheaper than the previous record price, quite an achievement in today’s tariff shopping climate. Besides, if you’re truly on a budget, you may want to choose the $84.99 Kindle that’s also on sale.

I’m not the only editor at Mashable who appreciates this Amazon e-reader. Our in-house Kindle Tester, Samantha Mangino, stated in her review that the new Paperwhite “is the only one you need.”

And there’s a reason we believe this to be the best Kindle for the majority of readers. The Kindle Paperwhite includes features like:

– 7-inch glare-free display with 300 nits brightness
– Battery life of up to 12 weeks
– 16GB of internal storage
– IPX8 waterproof rating
– 25 percent brighter display with better contrast
