Liam Neeson takes on the legendary character once portrayed by Leslie Nielsen in the anticipated 2025 reboot of The Naked Gun, and the freshly released teaser trailer ensures a comedically thrilling experience.
Directed by Akiva Schaffer (Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping) and produced by Seth MacFarlane, the film features Neeson as Lt. Frank Drebin Jr., the offspring of Nielsen’s original character. Now leading the clumsy Police Squad, Drebin Jr. is prepared to continue the family tradition—mayhem included.
The teaser begins with an intense bank heist. Armed robbers have taken hostages, and the police surround the premises. However, in an unexpected turn of events, an apparently innocent schoolgirl navigates through the blockade and enters the scene of the crime. Moments later, the disguise is revealed—quite literally. The “schoolgirl” is unveiled as Frank Drebin Jr., who expands in size and quickly sheds the outfit.
From this point onward, the ridiculousness amplifies. Drebin employs a lollipop—indeed, a lollipop—as a weapon, transforming the sugary snack into a means of delivering justice. Neeson, clad in a mismatched school uniform, executes slapstick action with a straight face, demonstrating he’s fully equipped for the franchise’s unique style of humor.
The teaser also features a touching (and comedic) tribute to the original Police Squad team, showcasing current members paying respects to their forerunners, including Nielsen’s Lt. Drebin and George Kennedy’s Capt. Hocken. True to Naked Gun tradition, the trailer wraps up with a playful nod to O.J. Simpson’s portrayal as Det. Nordberg, breaking the fourth wall in classic parody fashion.
Alongside Neeson, the cast includes Pamela Anderson, Paul Walter Hauser, CCH Pounder, Kevin Durand, Cody Rhodes, Liza Koshy, Eddie Yu, and Danny Huston.
The Naked Gun premieres in theaters on August 1.
