Luther Vandross was a legendary figure in music whose artistry shaped an entire era. A recent documentary titled *Luther: Never Too Much* honors his memory and explores his remarkable life journey. Directed and produced by acclaimed filmmaker Dawn Porter, the film debuted at the Sundance Film Festival last year and has recently been shown on CNN. It is now poised to be released in UK and Irish theaters for one night only on January 30, with a fresh trailer launched today.
Vandross is celebrated for his everlasting classics, such as “Never Too Much,” “Dance with My Father,” “Here and Now,” and “Power of Love/Love Power,” to name just a few. Prior to achieving global stardom, he started his journey as a backing singer for iconic performers including David Bowie, Donna Summer, Diana Ross, Barbra Streisand, Chaka Khan, and Roberta Flack. Throughout his career, Vandross sold a staggering 40 million records internationally and earned 11 consecutive platinum albums.
The documentary incorporates archival footage of interviews with Vandross, who sadly passed away in 2005, to narrate his story. It also includes thoughts and memories from his close friends and associates, such as Dionne Warwick, Roberta Flack, Mariah Carey, and Valerie Simpson.
While the film showcases the exceptional milestones of Vandross’ Grammy-awarded career, it also addresses the obstacles he encountered. These challenges included his fight for the acknowledgment his artistry merited, the discrimination faced as a Black artist, the scrutiny regarding his weight, and personal battles that influenced his life.
*Luther: Never Too Much* is scheduled to be shown in UK and Irish cinemas on January 30. For audiences in the U.S., the film, released in 2024, can be streamed on CNN through Hulu with Live TV.
